An elementary school principal in Hamilton faces charges of sexual assault and sexual interference on allegations he abused a student.

Police officials in Hamilton say the complainant claims the abuse happened in 2017.

54-year old Damir 'Dan' Ivankovic of Stoney Creek was arrested this week and released by the courts on a promise to return before a judge next month.

Ivankovic is the principal at Hamilton's Ryerson Elementary School.

A letter sent home with students says a temporary principal has been appointed to the school while Ivankovic is on 'home assignment' and not at work.

The school board says it is co-operating with the investigation.

The charges have not been proven in court.
