Head-on collision near Port Perry early Saturday claims 3 lives

A head-on collision in Scugog near Port Perry early Saturday morning has claimed 3 lives and left two others in serious condition.

OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt confirmed the accident occurred at around 1 a.m. , when a northbound SUV traveling on Highway 7/12 crossed over the median and collided with a southbound car near Scugog Line 4.

Inside the car were its 59-year-old male driver and two female passengers, ages 55 and 44, all of whom were pronounced dead at the scene.

A fourth female passenger remains in hospital with critical injuries, while the 68-year-old male driver of the SUV is being treated for serious injuries.

"We're trying to figure out exactly what's going on here," Schmidt told NEWSTALK1010's Ted Woloshyn Saturday afternoon. "It's just absolutely devastating."

Schmidt added that it didn't appear weather or road conditions played a factor in the crash.

All three victims were in the southbound vehicle. Another passenger is one of the injured along with the driver of the SUV, the lone occupant of that vehicle.

Schmidt adds the OPP are in the process of gathering more information about the accident and have spoken to some witnesses as well as those injured in the hospital.

"Just such a violent collision," he said. "Highway speed, head-on, a large vehicle sliding into it."

Schmidt confirms the driver of the car and one of the passengers related, but it's unclear what relation if any, the other passengers had.

No charges have been laid at this time as the investigation continues.

The area around the accident scene has since reopened to traffic.
