New numbers show the vast majority of Toronto Police officers live outside the city

Toronto has roughly 5,000 uniformed police officers but a new analysis by the Globe and Mail suggest most of them do not live in the city.

It found that about three quarters of officers live in places like Halton, Peel, Durham, or even as far away as Barrie.

The Globe says the numbers come from partial postal code data obtained through a freedom of information request.

There has been some concern about whether this might lead to a disconnect between officers and the communities they serve.

It's an issue noted by Justice Michael Tulloch in his review of street checks last week.

He says he heard from many stakeholders who were concerned about this issue, worried that these officers may not have a deep knowledge of the communities they police.
