SIU called in after man shot dead near GO station in Hamilton

Hamilton shooting

The province's Special Investigations Unit has been called in following a shooting in Hamilton.

It happened late Friday night on James Street South near the Hunter Street GO station.

SIU spokesperson Jason Gennaro told CP24 officers were initially called to a bar on Catharine Street North for an assault.

He says police received information at that point indicating that a suspect in the assault was armed with a gun.

Around the same time, an officer  spotted a man believed to be involved in the assault walking in the middle of James Street near the GO station.

Gennaro says that man was shot more than once by the officer.

“At the moment all I can tell you is that one of the officers who attended here on James Street recognized the man, had an interaction with the man and then shots were discharged,” SIU spokesperson Jason Gennaro told CP24 on Saturday morning. “Preliminary reports were that the man was armed with a weapon, however to get into specifics about what took place during the interaction is not something we can do at this point. That is part of our investigation.”

Gennaro says the victim is 36 years old and from Hamilton.

The SIU is an arms-length agency that investigates cases involving police that result in death, serious injury or sexual assault.
