TTC fares going up April 1

While Torontonians will be paying more for gas as of April 1 with the introduction of the federal carbon tax, those who rely on TTC rather than the car will also feel the pinch in their wallets.

The cost of most fares and passes is set to increase Monday morning, adding 10 cents to most fare media including those paid by Presto.

Monthly adult passes will rise by $4.90 per month while 12-month passes jump by $4.55 monthly. The TTC says anyone who has signed up for preauthorized payment on the latter option may already notice an increased charge processed.

For seniors, students and post-secondary students, passes will increase by $5.70 per month.

Another change as of April 1 - the transit agency is discontinuing its weekly pass.

In a news release, the TTC says the fare hike "keeps the average fare increase over the last two years in line with the rate of inflation," while reminding customers that there was no fare increase in 2018.

Adult cash fare remains at $3.25 per ride - a number that has remained unchanged since January 2016.

The TTC also says it continues to explore different options for passes that can be made available on Presto in the future.
