UPDATE: Embattled York Region school board director dismissed

The York Region District School Board has started the search for a new Director of Education, after J. Philip Parappally was fired on Wednesday.

Parappally's leadership and ethics were called into question as a report was released last week that looked into allegations of dysfunction and incompetence at the board.

The investigators, who were working on behalf of the Education Ministry, claim Parappally fostered a "culture of mistrust" among trustees and staffers and had even asked senior staff members to spy on each other.

Education Minister Mitzie Hunter also ordered Parappally's contract be reviewed.

He'd signed a 10-year deal, when the average for most directors is around five.

The agreement also included provisions that would have given the 17-year public servant 'job for life,' as a senior staff member when his term as chair wrapped up.

Parappally earned a salary of roughly $260,000 last year.

It is unclear whether or not he is eligible for severance.

Officials with the York Region District School Board told NEWSTALK 1010 they could not comment, out of concerns over privacy.
