UPDATE: Industrial fire in Brampton produces heavy smoke and odorous smell
Brampton Fire and Peel Regional Police have been kept busy dealing with an industrial fire that began Thursday evening.
It was still burning on Friday morning.
The fire started in a steel yard in the area of Intermodal Drive and Goreway Drive just before 5:20 p.m.
Const. Danny Marttini confirmed to NEWSTALK1010 the fire was pretty much contained to one space.
"It's a steel pile apparently in a yard, so it's not expected to spread or anything from where they're at."
No injuries were reported. The biggest concern was the heavy smoke, considered to be non-toxic, but packing quite a punch with a heavy layer and odorous smell.
That forced Brampton Fire Services and Emergency Services a "shelter in place" order, to keep local residents in the area out of harms way.
Marttini added some of those residents called Peel Police concerned about the heavy smoke and smell.
"I'm getting comments where people are saying the smoke smell is not nice, it doesn't smell good and it's heavy."
Officials say there is no concern about air quality in the area.
