UPDATE: Teenager killed in daytime shooting in Scarborough

A young man, believed to be about 18-years-old has died after a daytime shooting near a number of Toronto schools.

Toronto Police say they were called to a plaza near Birchmount Rd and Sheppard Ave E at about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday with reports of several gunshots fired.

A suspect described only as black male seen running towards Stephen Leacock Collegiate Institute but police can't say where he went afterward.

Stephen Leacock, John Buchan Senior Public School, Pauline Johnson Junior Public School and Tam O'Shanter Junior Public School were all under lockdown for parts of the afternoon but all students were released to their parents before 5 p.m.

The Toronto District School Board's website explains that during a lockdown outer doors to the school are locked, students are kept in their classrooms or other safe locations with lights off where possible and cellphone use is restricted.

Police say the victim was with two or three friends when he was shot and they are now looking to speak with those friends. The victim was not a student at the nearby high school.
