WATCH: Toronto-based Pixar short "Bao"
"Bao" was written and directed by Canadian artist Domee Shi and is shortlisted for an Oscar. The film tells the story of a an aging and lonely Chinese-Canadian mother who suffers from 'empty nest syndrome'. She unexpectedly receives a second chance at motherhood when she makes a dumpling that comes to life as a boy.
Domee Shi was born in Chongqing, China, but immigrated to Toronto in 1991. She studied art an animation at Sheridan College where she graduated in 2011. Shi then worked as a storyboard artist on the Pixar films "Inside Out", "The Good Dinosaur", "Incredibles 2" and "Toy Story 4".
"Bao" premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in April 2018, and subsequently accompanied Incredibles 2 in theaters as a trailer.
