Fewer people are being shot in Toronto compared to last year
It's only a snapshot into the year, but Toronto Police are encouraged by the numbers they are seeing when it comes to violent crime.
The number of shootings is down 6% and the number of homicides is down from 22 last year at this time, to 13 this year.
But spokesperson Mark Pugash is being cautious.
"I have to say, it's really early in this year, and we really have to see much more."
Still he says the fact that the numbers are going down and not up, is good.
Pugash points to January of last year, where we had 10 murders in that one month. This year, there have been 10 murders in the first two and a half months.
Interesting to note as well, is that there have been no fatal stabbings in Toronto so far in 2017. That's down from three in the same time period last year.
All that being said, there is no magic answer to why this is happening.
"Without being flippant, the only way to know for certain is to speak with active criminals." says Pugash.
But he says they are hoping these early trends contiunue in 2017.
