Highway 3 Expansion Doesn't Change Enforcement: OPP
Enforcement by police doesn't change when Highway 3 expands to four lanes from Essex to Leamington.
As you heard on AM800 News on Monday, the province says construction will begin in 2021 to widened the highway from two to four lanes up to County Rd. 34.
West Region OPP Inspector Shawn Johnson says infrastructure is only one piece of the puzzle when it comes to driving safely.
"Our job is to make sure the public," he says. "The motoring public is safe, whether or not it is the commercial motor vehicle travelling through whether or not it is people visiting our community, wine country or if it is people commuting, our job is to make sure everyone gets to where they are going safe."
He adds speeding and distracted driving also play factors, regardless of the number of lanes.
"Right from the point the shovel goes in the ground, we will make sure all the workers, all the community is safe through that up until the point that the road is official opened up, we will do all we can with regards to enforcement, education and awareness to make sure the public do their part."
The highway has been the scene of several fatal head-on crashes in previous years.
