VIDEO: Sharp Increase in Stunt Driving Charges in Windsor
A dramatic increase in the number of stunt driving charges being laid in Windsor.
According to city police, 83 stunt driving charges have been laid in the first six months of 2019, compared to 24 during the first six months of 2018.
A total of 65 stunt driving charges were laid in Windsor in 2018.
A stunt driving charge is laid against any driver caught going 50 km/h over the posted speed limit.
Speaking on AM800's The Lynn Martin Show, Sergeant Steve Betteridge says there's a couple of different ways to look at the stats.
"That could be that more people are speeding. That could be that we're making more of an effort to target that," he says.
Despite the safety risks alone, Betteridge says a stunt driving charge also comes with a financial impact.
"Speaking with some people in the insurance field, the information I'm receiving is that insurance companies are treating a stunt driving charge in a similar manner as how they would treat an impaired driving arrest, as far as insurance coverage."
Windsor police conducted a traffic enforcement blitz on Friday, August 9th along the EC Row Expressway.
119 drivers were pulled over, the majority of them for speeding. Three stunt driving charges were also issued.
Anyone stopped for stunt driving is issued an immediate seven-day driver licence suspension and their vehicle is impounded. If convicted of the charge, the driver faces a licence suspension of up to two years for a first offence, a six month jail term and a fine of $2,000 to $10,000.
