Fisheries and Oceans Canada temporarily halts shellfish harvesting in some areas

NB-Eng 2

Heavy rain which accompanied post-tropical storm Dorian over the weekend has resulted in the closure of shellfish harvesting in some areas of the province.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada says the closure applies to all waters within 3-kilometres of the coast, including all islands in the northeast and east of the province, from Maisonnette to the Nova Scotia boarder.

The closures will remain in effect for a minimum of seven days, and are in addition to closures already in place.

The department says the closure aims to protect fishers and the public.

It says eating contaminated shellfish can lead to serious illness or even death, and that cooking shellfish does not destroy the toxins that may be present in a closed area.
