Pembroke Debates Cannabis Store Rules
The Ottawa Valley could get its own legal cannabis store in the next few months, but Pembroke has decided it won't try to set its own extra rules surrounding them.
The province will award licenses for 50 new stores on August 20th, and applications will be considered this time from prospective business owners in smaller cities.
Pembroke City Council debated the issue this summer, but agreed that the province's rules for stores already seem to overrride the local planning process.
Council agreed there's no point going to the trouble and expense of drawing up new rules when there's no guarantee the province would honour them.
Under provincial legislation, the stores must be at least 150 meters away from schools, but it's Council's understanding that municipalities must otherwise treat the stores like any other business.
