13 Dead In Shooting At California Country Bar

Twelve people died and many more were injured when a gunman opened fire inside a country music bar in Thousand Oaks, California late Wednesday night. The suspected shooter is also dead.

Borderline Bar & Grill hosts a "College Country Night" on Wednesdays, so it is a popular spot for students from nearby Pepperdine, a private Christian university.

"At this time, the University is working to identify and provide support to those students," read a tweet from Pepperdine. "The University offers its deepest condolences and is praying for everyone involved in tonight’s tragic events."

Officials said a gunman, dressed all in black, threw smoke bombs and opened fire on the crowd at around 11:20 p.m. Among the dead is Sgt. Ron Helus, a police officer who tried to stop the massacre.

Sheriff Geoff Dean told reporters: “It’s a horrific scene in there. There’s blood everywhere.”

Last year, a gunman killed 58 people at an outdoor country music festival in Las Vegas.
