Petawawa Detour Bridge Is Safe: MTO

The Ministry of Transportation says the only detour bridge over the Petawawa River is safe.

The Highway 17 bridge is the only way to get across the Petawawa River - and the only way to travel anywhere west of Petawawa - while the Petawawa Boulevard bridge linking the town and Garrison Petawawa is closed due to record water volmes that have caused severe erosion along its banks.

Questions have been raised about the integrity of the Highway 17 bridge, since it also crosses the same fast-flowing river.

Officials with the Ministry tell Star 96.7 they had structural engineers out to that bridge on Monday afternoon, and they have no concerns with its integrity.

They say the Highway 17 bridge has a lot of clearance over the fast flowing river and the bridge is safe for travel.

Ministry engineers will continue to monitor that bridge for any issues.

Without that bridge, while the Petawawa Boulevard bridge is closed, the town Petawawa would be cut off from the Garrison altogether traffic would not be able to get beyond Petawawa to any points west.
