PRH Seeing Higher Success Rates of Smoking Cessation Programs

Smoking Cessation programs are seeing higher success rates at the Pembroke Regional Hospital.

The PRH recently released that from April 1, 2017 until March 31st of 2018, there were 1,078 tobacco users admitted to the hospital and offered their tobacco addiction treatment program and an estimated 230 people quit smoking.

Sabine Mersmann, the Vice President of Patient Services and Community Care says she believes the passionate staff has a lot to do with the success of the program they use…

“They actually call patients on a regular basis afterwards, more frequently at first, and then at longer intervals, and if at any time the patient indicates that things are not going well, they are connected to a counselor and then it’s being discussed -what it would take to keep them smoke free.”

As well, out of 300 referrals to community-based smoking cessation counselling an additional 54 people were able to quit smoking in the past year.
