UPDATE: House Fire At Garrison Petawawa

Petawawa’s military community is working to help and support a woman who was displaced by a house fire yesterday.

The late afternoon fire on Ortona Avenue caused extensive damage to the house.

There were no injuries reported, and the cause is under investigation by the Garrison Fire Department.

Garrison Public Affairs Officer Captain Karyn Mazurek says the affected person’s military unit and some support services have been working to arrange support and temporary housing.

"Absolutely, the Garrison is, in fact, very well prepared and perfectly situated to be able to provide this type of support for our members", Capt. Mazurek told Star 96.7.

"Garrison leadership was on scene almost as soon as they found out it had happened, to ensure that that support was provided and that the members' needs were met", Mazurek added.

At one point during the fire yesterday, flames and smoke were shooting out the side of the house.

While officials have not commented on the extent of the damage, there is a large charred section along the side of the home.
