UPDATE: Ice Tragedy On Mississippi Lake

A tragic weekend on the ice on Mississippi Lake, south of Arnprior, where two vehicles went through the ice.

In one instance, a 31-year-old man from Drummond North Elmsley Township, in Lanark County, is dead and another is in hospital with hypothermia after a Volkswagen car broke through the ice.

Police say they pulled the body of the deceased man from the water after being called to the Craig Shore area of the lake at around 3:45 a.m.

Police also discovered that a side-by-side ATV had also gone through the ice at around the same time, only a short distance away.

They appear to be two unrelated incidents but OPP constable David Bird tells CTV news they don’t know why nobody from the ATV alerted police.

"Three occupants, as it turned out, from the ATV, made it away to another residence", Const. Bird told CTV's Mike Arsalides on Sunday.

"That issue of it not being reported, and us not being aware, is being investigated".

Investigators are now trying to figure out why those involved were out on the ice with vehicles in the middle of the night.

In the meantime, the public is asked not to travel the lake between:

The West: Pretties Island (ie. Pretties Island Road)

The East: Craig Shore (ie. 9th Line of Beckwith and Tennyson Road)

Police continue to remind the public that "no ice is safe ice".
