After a lengthy debate, Vernon Council agreed to look at paying private security to patrol the downtown area during the summer months.
The proposal would be from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m., when bylaw is not on duty.
City staff will come back to council with quotes on the cost and best practices, but due to the length of time that will take, the earlier the service could begin if council can find the money to pay for it, it would not be able to start till next summer.
It has been a hot topic at city hall for months. After another lengthy discussion, Vernon city council voted to approve installing a fence at Marshall Fields that would separate the playing fields from the off-leash dog park area.
The quote for the chain link fence would cost taxpayers $87,000 but council is concerned about that price.
