The city of Vernon is spending an extra 81-thousand dollars to have by-law officers monitor homeless camps during shoulder seasons in the early spring and late fall.
Councillor Scott Anderson has also asked staff for a report on a bylaw Victoria uses. Under that bylaw, people could still camp on public sites until 7 a-m, but would then have to move, which Anderson says stops encampments from developing.
Last November the City of Vernon removed a number of encampments from park lands. Staff from City operations and bylaw compliance were involved in removing large volumes of refuse from camp locations in Polson Park and Kal Tire Place green spaces.
