Hullcar Water Review
A University of Victoria expert has been commissioned by the provincial government to advise and oversee the review of pollution within the Hullcar Aquifer in Spallumcheen.
Oliver Brandes, the co-director of a project on ecological governance at the university, will also make recommendations to Environment Minister George Heyman to ensure agricultural practices and drinking water protection can be efficiently and safely combined.
The Hullcar aquifer supplies drinking water to about 150 people in the North Okanagan but has been tainted by elevated nitrate levels have been found within the underground aquifer, possible from the use of liquid manure on the fields above it.
Heyman announced the review of the problem earlier this summer and a release from the ministry says the findings will be used to inform the development of future regulations and help provide solutions to protect water quality.
