Staff Recommend Nixing Shopping Cart Ban

A controversial item on the agenda at Vernon city council Tuesday.

In July,  Council voted 5-1 in support of a shopping cart ban, but the BC Civil Liberties Association and Pivot Legal Society say the bylaw is discriminatory to homeless people and violates the Charter of Rights.

City staff is recommending council not proceed with the bylaw that would outlaw shopping carts in public places.

The shopping cart ban was one of the recommendations made by the Activate Safety Task Force.
