Members of Vernon City Council, Greater Vernon Advisory Committee (GVAC), MQN Architects, Kal Tire and VVI Construction Ltd. of Kelowna broke ground at the site of the new twinned arena facility at Kal Tire Place on Monday morning.
“It’s great to see the official beginning of construction for this project,” said Mayor Akbal Mund. “Our community is in need of an additional ice, and the new state-of-the-art facility will provide our numerous user groups a home they can be proud of.”“Vernon has established a reputation for hosting various sporting events, and the new twinned facility will enhance that ability,” said Juliette Cunningham, Vernon Councillor and GVAC Chair. Kal Tire has agreed to extend and expand its sponsorship of Kal Tire Place and the new twinned facility for an additional ten years until August 2027; the original four-year sponsorship agreement was set to expire this May.“Supporting an active and healthy community is something we are strongly committed to,” said Kal Tire president Robert Foord. “Kal Tire has been part of Vernon for over 60 years and we are pleased to be able to provide our long-term support to this community.”
VVI Construction Ltd. was the successful bidder for the construction of the new facility. The facility was designed by MQN Architects of Vernon who also designed the original MultiPlex. The new facility is scheduled to open in the fall of 2018. During construction, the lane on the west side of the facility will be closed to public traffic. Users are encouraged to use the entrance and lane on the east side of the building. The new parking lot on the south end of the building is nearing completion and should be open for public use in May.The project to twin Kal Tire Place was approved in a referendum to borrow $13,250,000 in November 2015. The facility will be owned by the RDNO and the design, construction and operation will be managed by the City of Vernon through the Design, Build, Operate, and Maintain Agreement which was signed by all the community partners—City of Vernon, District of Coldstream, Areas B and C in 2015.
