IH Immunization Changes

Some parents in Vernon aren't happy with Interior Health's decision to allow students in grade 9 to over rule their parent's choice regarding vaccination.

IH Manager of Communicable Disease Prevention & Immunization, Pamela De Bruin says health-care providers have a duty to involve minors in decisions about their health-care.  She says there is no set age in BC when a child is deemed capable. In Interior Health, students in Grade 9 will be given the opportunity to consent to immunization for themselves, even if their parents choose not to have them vaccinated.

The parent who approached us is very unhappy and says she's not alone, but De Bruin says Public Health Nurses don't begin immunizing until winter so there hasn't been much feedback and she's not expecting much.
