No Poppy Sidewalk

Plans by the City of Vernon to honour veterans with a poppy sidewalk have been rejected by the Royal Canadian Legion.

Vernon councillors had already approved the plan and had even selected an artist to paint the crosswalk, but Legion officials say the organization is opposed to poppies being painted on surfaces that are walked or driven on.

Mayor Akbal Mund says the city will look at another type of tribute, possibly placing poppy signage on lamp posts near Cenotaph Park.    He says the city is working with the local legion on the new plan.
