New numbers from the BC Coroners Service continue to highlight the deadly effects of the province's opioid crisis.
The coroner says more people died from illicit drug overdoses in the first eight months of this year than all of last year. Between January and the end of August - 1013 people died of drug overdoses eclipsing the record 982 deaths in 2016.
In Vernon there have been 16 overdose deaths this year, that's four more than last year. In Kelowna, 60 overdose deaths have been reported, so far this year, compared to 47 last year.
Fentanyl was detected in more than 80-percent of this year's overdose deaths, compared to just 4-percent in 2012.
Chief Coroner Lisa Lapointe says people need to know that no illicit substance in the province can be considered safe.
