Catholic Diocese of Saint John considers closing, amalgamating some churches

The Catholic Diocese of Saint John is proposing closing or amalgamating some churches as it looks to address some of its financial problems.

Bishop Robert Harris tells the CBC the diocese currently operates 83 buildings in the Saint John, Fredericton and Miramichi.

But with shrinking congregations and fewer priests, Harris says the status quo can't continue.

The diocese is currently looking for feedback and recommendations from the public, and hopes to have plans in place for next year.
