Former First Nations chief appealing sexual assault convictions

The defence team for a former Esgenoopetitj First Nation chief is appealing his conviction on six counts of sexual assault against three women.

Wilbur Dedam was sentenced to nine years in prison after a jury found him guilty in September.

The women were teenagers or younger at the time of the assaults in the 1970s and 1980s.

The CBC reports one of the grounds cited for appeal deals with the historical nature of the allegations and claims the judge did not notify the jury of the difficulties in defending such a case.
