Fredericton Police to deploy body cameras on July 16th
The Fredericton Police Force says body cameras will be deployed on July 16th; months ahead of schedule.
A three-month pilot project last year where six officers volunteered to wear the cameras, provided by Axon Public Safety Canada Inc., was declared a success in December.
Deputy police Chief Martin Gaudet said at the time that police wanted to test the technology for a full year to get a better sense of the cost for video storage.
The officers decided when to turn the cameras on and off, but once they hit record, the footage was sent to cloud storage, where only an authorized member of the force could access it.
Gaudet said one of the hurdles they had to overcome was how to share that footage with Crown prosecutors in a secure manner.
