Good news for Fredericton swimmers
The City of Fredericton will help keep UNB’s pool open.
The City will contribute $140,000 a year for up to 3 years, so UNB can continue to operate the Sir Aitken Pool.
The province recently offered to help pay to extend the life of the pool and City Council has agreed in principle to be a partner in keeping the pool operating.
This commitment is contingent on the operation of the Sir Max Aitken pool, and all associated liabilities, being the responsibility of UNB and/or other parties. The City is prepared to enter into an agreement based on these terms.
Mayor Mike O'Brien says the city appreciates the efforts of those in the swimming community to bring all parties back to the table to find a short-term solution.
O'Brien says council recognized the importance of recreational aquatics, but new major capital projects must be prioritized in order to be fiscally responsible and fair to all taxpayers.
