Man, 82, looking at serving prison time for sex crimes against child

An 82-year-old man could be looking at serving prison time for historic sex crimes against a child after he appeared in the Saint John law courts Wednesday for his sentencing hearing.

The Telegraph-Journal reports James Ellis, who was found guilty last fall of the crimes, was told by Justice Darrell Stephenson that he couldn't see imposing less than a two year prison sentence.

The main victim, whose identity is protected by a publication ban, has testified that she was molested by Ellis more than fifteen years ago when she was between four and eight years old.

The crimes were reported in 2015 and the woman's sister also testified that she had been molested too.

The Telegraph-Journal reports Ellis was found guilty of sexual assault and invitation to sexual touching, but his sentencing was delayed due to a "significant divergence" in the proposed sentences by the Crown and Ellis' lawyer.
