More than 7,000 Fredericton households at risk of homelessness

The Community Action Group on Homelessness says more than 7,000 Fredericton households are at risk of homelessness due to job loss, health failure or family breakdowns.

Director Faith McFarland says 7,720 households spend more than 30 per cent of their income on housing, with nearly half of those households spending more than half of their income.

McFarland says Fredericton's low vacancy rates, combined with high rental rates, are part of the problem.

She says municipalities can help by ensuring affordability through zoning and bylaws, and by lobbying the province to grant communities more control over affordability measures.
