More than 8,000 New Brunswickers are still without power

New Brunswick Power is making slow progress getting the lights back on after winds ripped through the province on Saturday.

According to the utility company's online power outage map, there are more than 1,000 outages across the province with more than 8,000 customers affected, though it is unclear if all the outages reported are related to last weekend's weather.

In a press release e-mailed to our newsroom, New Brunswick Power says there will be approximately 300 crews from NB Power, contractors and neighbouring utilities on the ground today.

The utility company also says the main goal is to restore the largest number of customers first through substations and main power lines, then work on restoring each circuit on the line if there are buildings without power once the main line is repaired.

New Brunswick Power is also reminding the public to stay 10 meters away from any downed power lines, or anything touching power lines, and to make sure that any generator being used is properly vented.
