N.B. based company reacts to Washington legislature's decision to phase out Atlantic salmon farms
A New Brunswick-based aquaculture company says it is "disappointed" by Washington legislature's decision to phase out ocean-based Atlantic salmon farms.
Cooke Aquaculture says it's evaluating its options after Friday's vote to phase out net-pen farms as leases come up for renewal over the next seven years.
The bill comes after the company's pens collapsed last summer and released hundreds of thousands of invasive Atlantic salmon into Pacific waters.
A spokesperson for the Atlantic Salmon Federation says he doesn't think Atlantic Canada will see a similar ban, but says there could be calls for stricter regulations.
