N.B. government sees marijuana as a form of green gold

Marijuana ruined one former New Brunswick premier's career, but the current premier sees it as a boost to the economy.

The Liberal government is looking to the industry as a form of green gold in a province awash in red ink.

Fred Bergman, a senior policy analyst with the Atlantic Provinces Economic Council, says the strategy and expected job creation will help the provincial economy.

Premier Brian Gallant says the marijuana industry in Canada is expected to be worth billions of dollars and create thousands of jobs and he says New Brunswick is making sure it gets in on the ground floor in efforts to grow its economy.

It's a different attitude toward pot than in the 80's when then-premier Richard Hatfield was charged with criminal possession after marijuana was found in his suitcase.

He was acquitted but the scandal helped push him out of office.
