N.B Green Party bans candidate from running in provincial election
The New Brunswick Green Party has barred one of its candidates from running in the provincial election.
Chris Smissaert, as reported in the Telegraph-Journal, confirmed Thursday that he had been removed as the official candidate in Fredericton North for the September 24th election.
Smissaert won the nomination last November following a three-way race.
The Telegraph-Journal reports the party has cited "unspecified behavioural issues" as the reason, while party president Wayne Dryer tells the newspaper the issues did not involve sexual misconduct.
Dryer says the decision to ban Smissaert from running was made by the 17-member provincial council for the Greens on March 28th after lengthy discussions.
He says this was the first time the provincial party had to disqualify a candidate who had won a riding nomination.
