N.B. looking at new political financing model for municipal candidates

The New Brunswick government is looking to create provincially mandated financial reporting requirements for municipal election candidates.

Environment and Local Government Minister Serge Rousselle says they're committed to working with municipalities to create transparency and accountability.

Municipal candidates aren't currently subject to contribution limits and financial reporting requirements, unlike provincial candidates.

New Brunswick is one of just four jurisdictions in Canada, along with Prince Edward Island, Yukon and Nunavut, without this type of political financing model in place.

The province says it's aiming to have these amendments to the Municipal Elections Act in place for the next municipal elections in May 2020.
