N.B. man pleads guilty to conspiracy to commit human smuggling

A 50-year-old man from northwestern New Brunswick has been fined $5,200 after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit human smuggling.

Richard Cyr of Baker Brook was one of two men charged by the RCMP in July 2016 after a 46-year-old woman entered the United States illegally.

The woman, an Ecuadorean national, was arrested by U.S. authorities in Van Buren, Maine, after crossing the Saint John River with a paddle boat.

A charge of conspiracy to commit human smuggling against a 67-year-old Edmundston man was withdrawn.
