NB boxer in critical condition after boxing event
A sad note from Saturday's boxing event at the Aitken Centre.
The Daily Gleaner reports that David Whittom lies in critical condition in Saint John Regional Hospital after he underwent brain surgery in the wee hours of yesterday morning.
The 38-year-old native of St. Quentin, who trains in Quebec City, lost by technical knockout in the 10th round to Gary Kopas of Saskatoon in their Canadian Professional Cruiserweight title fight.
The referee stopped the fight after Kopas landed a flurry of punches.
Whittom staggered and appeared dazed in the aftermath, but was examined at ringside and appeared coherent afterwards. It was later he started to feel ill and was taken to the Chalmers Hospital, where a C-T scan discovered a brain hemmorage. He was later transferred to Saint John.
