Nova Scotia RCMP now looking into death of New Brunswick inmate

An investigation into the death of a New Brunswick inmate has been handed over to the Nova Scotia RCMP.

33 year old Matthew Hines died while in custody at the Dorchester Penitentiary last year.

CBC News reported Hines was beaten and repeatedly pepper sprayed by guards after he refused to return to his cell.

He was later pronounced dead in a Moncton hospital.

A previous report by the Correctional Service of Canada says prison guards use 'inappropriate' force. Hines was from Cape Breton.

Editor's note: An earlier version of this story indicated a report by the New Brunswick RCMP says prison guards use 'inappropriate' force. That report was actually written by the Correctional Service of Canada.
