Nurses Association of New Brunswick's AGM to address cannabis in the workplace

New Brunswick's largest group of health care professionals will convene Thursday for an Annual General Meeting on cannabis in the workplace.

A news release from the Nurses Association of New Brunswick says Dr. Bill Howatt of Morneau Shepell is set to discuss the topic, which will impact nurses and nurse regulators when cannabis becomes legal through patients in their care, colleagues, friends, families, and potentially at a personal level.

The keynote address will aim to provide a forum for nurses to learn and explore the relationship between cannabis and dependency, the link between stress and addiction as well as addiction and mental health, and the impact of cannabis legalization on the workplace.

Karen Frenette, the President of the Nurses Association of New Brunswick, says it's important for the group, which represents 8,600 registered nurses and nurse practitioners in the province, to prepare for the impact cannabis will have on an already highly stressed work environment and identify ways to provide support.

The event is taking place at the Fredericton Convention Centre.
