One person arrested after daytime home invasion in Fredericton

Police in Fredericton say one person is in custody following a home invasion on the city's south side.

Spokesperson Heidi Cyr said officers were called to a Smythe Street home around 9 a.m. Tuesday.

Cyr said the homeowner called police to report a break and enter in progress.

"When [officers] arrived, they saw that the suspect was running on foot, and shortly after, they apprehended him," Cyr told reporters at the scene Tuesday morning.

Investigators said the male homeowner was assaulted with a weapon and was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Det. Tim MacDougall said it's unclear if the incident is related to any other recent home invasions in the city. "It's early on in the investigation," he said.

MacDougall said it's also unknown whether the homeowners knew the suspect.

Police would not say if anything was taken, or what kind of weapon was allegedly used.

Several police cars, including the K-9 unit, were still on scene around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.
