Property owners may see increases in taxes owed, despite assessments being frozen
Government says some property owners may see an increase in taxes owed on their Property Assessment and Property Tax notices despite assessments being frozen at last year's levels.
A news release from the province says the reason for the increase is that tax rates set by local governments are not frozen.
Environment and Local Government Minister Serge Rousselle says the assessment determines the assessed value of a property, while local governments set the tax rate.
This year, 49 per cent of local governments raised their rates.
Property taxes are used to pay for services such as firefighting, police, recreation, infrastructure, and transportation
Rousselle says anyone with questions or concerns is encouraged to contact their regional assessment offices.
