Riverside Montessori Learning Centre receives council approval to expand

The Riverside Montessori Learning Centre in Fredericton has been given the green light to expand.

The centre applied to the city to add a child care centre and a Montessori elementary school at 711 Woodstock Road.

A zone amendment to permit the centre and school passed third reading at Monday night's city council meeting.

The centre has been offering child care and after-school services on the adjacent property at 717 Woodstock Road since 2013, according to a staff report by a city planner.

Marcello Battilana, community planning manager, said previously that the move is the next logical step for the centre.

Battilana said the existing centre has been quite successful in the area, adding that there have not been any negative impacts to the adjacent community.

The staff report indicates that the first phase of the proposal would see classes for about 20 children in kindergarten to grade 1.

Phase two would see the addition of grades two to five with additional 45 to 50 children.

According to the staff report, elementary classes would run from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily and the after-school program would start at 3 p.m., and the total number of children on site at any time would be limited to 70.
