Saint John man plans to retire after $1M lottery win

A Saint John man says he plans to hang up his tool belt after winning a $1 million lottery prize.

John Funk won the Lotto 6/49 guaranteed prize draw on Feb. 11 – becoming the second Atlantic Canadian guaranteed prize winner since January.

Funk, who's lived in Saint John for several years while doing contract work at the Irving Oil Refinery, says he plans to retire in the city with his long-time partner Connie.

The couple had already found a piece of property and drawn the plans for a new home, but thanks to the lottery win, will be able to add a few extras.

"I’ll have a three-car garage instead of a two-car garage," said John, "and I'll have a paved driveway."

"We'll have some toys, too," said Connie, "a couple of quads, snowmobiles."

They also have something in the works to surprise their two adult children, and hope to travel across Canada.

The lottery ticket was purchased at the Airport General Store on Loch Lomond Road, which will receive a one per cent retailers' commission.
