Speaker Chris Collins announces plans to run as independent

The Speaker of the New Brunswick legislature has announced plans to pursue his fourth term as MLA for Moncton Centre.

The Times and Transcript reports Chris Collins announced in an email statement Friday morning that he would be running, only this time as an independent candidate.

An investigation wrapped up last week looking into harassment allegations against Collins.

The legislature's administration committee received a summary of findings regarding the allegations from an independent, third-party investigator.

Investigator Leslie Macleod concluded that the complaint against Collins was "founded in part," and that there was a violation of the province's workforce harassment policy.

Collins issued a public apology earlier this week.

Collins was suspended from the Liberal caucus after the allegations were made public in April.

He announced in May that he would sit as an independent.
