UNB Athletes of the Week

Hannah Currie, from the women’s basketball team, and Cooper Wilks, a new addition to the men’s basketball team, are the Varsity Reds/Papa John’s Pizza Athletes of the Week.

The UNB Varsity Reds/Papa John’s Pizza female Athlete of the Week is Hannah Currie, from the women’s basketball team.

Currie recorded a double-double in Saturday’s 70-64 loss to Acadia, the top-ranked team in the country.

The fifth-year Varsity Red scored a game-high 23 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. She also had three assists and a pair of steals.

“Hannah had a huge game for us against Acadia,” says Varsity Reds head coach Jeff Speedy. “She had a very strong weekend to end the first semester and has certainly picked up where she left off. She is playing well and I am excited to watch her continue to play at such a high level.”

Currie and her teammates head to Cape Breton this weekend for a pair of games, Friday and Saturday, against the Capers.

The UNB Varsity Reds/Papa John’s Pizza male Athlete of the Week is Cooper Wilks, from the men’s basketball team.

In his Varsity Reds’ home and regular season debut, Wilks scored 16 points and grabbed five rebounds to lead UNB in an 80-67 win over Acadia.

Added to the roster in advance of the second half of the Atlantic University Sport season, Wilks also contributed two assists and two steals.

“In his brief time with us, Cooper has made an immediate impact with our program,” says Varsity Reds head coach Brent Baker. “His play at both ends of the court gives us an interior presence that we’ll need for the second half of the season.”

Wilks and the Varsity Reds visit Cape Breton Friday and Saturday, for a pair of games against the Capers.
