UNB Athletes of the Week

Connor McConnell
Men’s Volleyball
2nd Year Business Administration
Hanwell, NB

The UNB Varsity Reds/Papa John’s Pizza male Athlete of the Week is Connor McConnell, from the men’s volleyball team.

McConnell had 13 kills and nine digs in Saturday’s 3-1 win over the Dal Tigers.

The second year V-Red added six block-attacks and tied for a team-high 17 points in the victory, earning Player of the Match honours.

“Connor had a strong performance on Saturday night, elevating his game both offensively and defensively,” says Varsity Reds head coach Dan McMorran. “When he plays at that level of efficiency, his attack and block can dominate.”

McConnell and his teammates head to Sherbrooke, Quebec, this weekend, for the final AUS/RSEQ interlock tournament of the season.

Nicole Esson
Women’s Basketball
4th Year Nursing
Fredericton, NB

The UNB Varsity Reds/Papa John’s Pizza female Athlete of the Week is Nicole Esson, from the women’s basketball team.

Esson came off the bench to lead the Varsity Reds in scoring in Saturday’s 68-46 win at St FX.

The fourth year player scored a game-high 21 points and grabbed six rebounds to help UNB end a five-game losing skid and earn Player of the Game honours.

“With three starters out and one playing with a torn ACL, Nicole had a great game and really delivered when we needed her to,” says Varsity Reds head coach Jeff Speedy. “We were not panicking after our recent string of loses, but it was certainly nice to get back in the win column. We don’t get that ‘W’ without Nic.”

Esson and her teammates enjoy a weekend off, before hosting the UPEI Panthers on February 16th and 17th.
