The UNB Varsity Reds/Papa John’s Pizza male Athlete of the Week is Javon Masters, from the men’s basketball team.

It was an exceptional week for the fifth-year senior guard, who was named the Atlantic University Sport MVP ahead of the conference championship tournament.

Masters then affirmed that selection by leading the Varsity Reds to their first AUS championship since 1967.

In Saturday’s 96-83 semi-final win over Memorial, Masters scored 20 points, grabbed three rebounds, had nine assists and three steals.

In Sunday’s 84-81 title game victory over St FX, he knocked down 28 points, had eight rebounds and four assists.

“Javon finished his AUS career in grand style, helping us capture UNB’s first conference title in 51 years,” says Varsity Reds head coach Brent Baker. “He’s been special for five years and he’s so deserving of this championship.”
